I grew up in the mountains of North Georgia and Western North Carolina and was horse crazy from day one. I began taking dressage lessons at age 11. The next year I started spending the summers working at a Thoroughbred breeding farm for a chance to ride. This background gave me a solid foundation in flatwork fundamentals, young horse and stallion handling, overall horse care, and barn management.
By age 14 I purchased my first horse, an OTTB mare and began working with Gina Cook and Ron Smeets, continuing in my dressage training. At age 16 I spent the summer as a working student for Ron in the Netherlands. Following graduation from high school, I attended the University of Georgia and majored in Animal Science with a minor in Equine Science and Management. While at college I was able to join the UGA Eventing Team and ride with instructors such as Richard Lamb, Beth Stelzleni, Imtes Annes, and Stephen Bradley. Among many top placings and year end awards, I placed 3rd at the Beginner Novice level at the American Eventing Championships in 2011 and 2nd at the Novice level in 2012 with my own paint gelding Free Verse. I brought several different horses up through training level in eventing all starting from completely unbroke or very green. After spending so much time working with thoroughbreds as a teenager, I began to specialize in retraining OTTB's for eventing.
After completing my undergraduate degree, I continued my education at the University of Florida and earned a masters degree in Equine Nutrition in 2016. I have always had a passion for teaching others about anything horse related, and began teaching children and adults riding lessons while I started my own independent equine nutrition consulting agency, Balance Equine Consulting in 2017. In the last 5 years I have ridden to 3rd level in dressage and the Preliminary level in Eventing.
